Sketch of the network architecture. A 3D fully convolutional foveal neural network was trained. The network architecture is inspired by the human eye and the distribution of the photoreceptor cells, which have the highest resolution at the fovea centralis. The network consists of several blocks of convolutional layers, batch normalization and the rectified linear activation function (CBR), which extract features at different resolution levels. CBR blocks are followed by upsampling layers (CBRU) to match the resolution of the other levels
